Exact Area Conversion Factors

Imperial and metric area units are tied together exactly by the definitions of the foot, yard and mile, so these values are not approximations:

Marla, Kanal and Sarsai

Marla, kanal and sarsai are traditional land units used in Pakistan and parts of India. With the commonly used definition, 1 marla = 272.25 sq ft (a square rod, 16.5 ft × 16.5 ft), 1 marla = 9 sarsai and 1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 sq ft.

Square Feet to Square Meters (and Back)

Multiply square feet by 0.09290304 to get square meters. To go the other way, multiply square meters by about 10.7639. For example, 1,000 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 92.90304 m².

Acres, Hectares, Kanal and Marla

An acre is 43,560 sq ft. A hectare is 10,000 m², or about 2.47105 acres. With the standard marla, an acre is 8 kanal or 160 marla.

Area Formulas for Common Shapes

For an irregular shape, split it into rectangles, triangles and circles you can measure, calculate each area and add them. To work out a missing side of a right triangle first, use the Pythagorean theorem solver.

Real-Life Area Examples

• Flooring. A 15 ft × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. Add about 10% for cuts and waste to get 198 sq ft. With 2 ft × 2 ft tiles (4 sq ft each), that is 49.5, so buy 50 tiles.
• Painting. A wall 20 ft × 10 ft is 200 sq ft. Subtract a window (3 × 4 = 12 sq ft) and a door (3 × 7 = 21 sq ft) to get 167 sq ft to paint. Check the coverage on the paint can.
• Buying land. A 10 marla plot is 2,722.5 sq ft (about 252.9 m²). Compare listings in the same unit before you decide.
• Gardens and farms. Seed, fertilizer and irrigation are usually planned per acre or hectare.

Common Area Mistakes to Avoid

• "10 square feet" is not "10 feet square." A square 10 feet on each side is 100 sq ft, not 10 sq ft.
• Mixing units. Convert length and width to the same unit before multiplying (feet with feet, not feet with inches).
• Assuming every marla is the same. Confirm the definition used in your document.
• Confusing area with perimeter or volume. Area is flat space inside a shape. Perimeter is the distance around it.
• Rounding too early. Round only the final answer.
