How to Use the Marla to Square Feet Converter

1. Enter a value and choose the "From" unit (marla, kanal, sarsai, sq ft, sq yd, sq m, acre or hectare) and the "To" unit.

What Is a Marla?

The marla is a traditional land unit used in Pakistan and in parts of India. With the standard definition it equals a square rod (also called a perch), 16.5 ft × 16.5 ft, which is 272.25 square feet. Smaller and larger units are built from it: 1 sarsai = 1/9 marla = 30.25 sq ft, and 1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 sq ft. Residential plots are usually advertised in marla and kanal, while farmland is often described in acres. Marla Size Differs by Society

Not every scheme uses the same marla. The standard value is 272.25 sq ft, but some housing societies and developers quote a smaller one, for example 225 sq ft. A "5 marla" plot can therefore mean different areas:

Divide the area in square feet by 272.25. For example, 1,250 sq ft ÷ 272.25 ≈ 4.59 marla. Use 225 instead of 272.25 if your society uses the smaller marla.

Plot Dimensions to Marla

Multiply length by width (in feet) to get square feet, then divide by the marla size. Advertised "5 marla" or "10 marla" plots do not always measure exactly 5 or 10 marla, so measure or check the file. Common plot dimensions:

Price per Marla and per Square Foot

• Price per sq ft = price per marla ÷ 272.25
• Price per kanal = price per marla × 20
• Price per marla = total price ÷ number of marla

Illustration only, not a market price: a plot quoted at Rs 5,000,000 per marla works out to about Rs 18,365 per sq ft, or Rs 100,000,000 per kanal. Common Marla Conversion Mistakes

• Assuming one marla size everywhere. Confirm the definition used by your society or scheme.
• Trusting the advertised size. Compare the marla figure with the measured length and width.
• Mixing plot area with covered area. A house built on 10 marla does not have 10 marla of covered floor space.
• Forgetting the units are squared. 272.25 is square feet, not feet.
• Rounding too early. Keep several decimals and round only the final answer.
